Two of the ten honorable mentions went to germany, to marlena waldthausen for her reportage "finally no longer teased" and to jesco denzel for his reportage "on uncertain ground".
The winning photo draws attention to a problem: according to unicef, disabled children in west africa are often rejected or even abused by their families. They find refuge in a center in northern togo.
Unicef patron elke budenbender emphasized that the photo of the little boy with the prosthetic legs tells of the self-evidence and hope with which he lives his life – despite poverty and discrimination. "His look is a real challenge to us: help so that every child gets a fair chance in life," said the wife of german president frank-walter steinmeier.
